Final Project – New assignment

I’m just catching up after missing class for the past two weeks (out of town). Unfortunately, “My Traveler” has been cancelled and I’m now working with 4fruits on “Sobos.” This is my first attempt at a redesign of Sobos.

Midterm

I decided to do a travel website for my midterm. I wanted it to be very visual and include a photo swap/image rollover with thumbnails. It took me longer than I thought it would to create the home page and then it was easy to make a couple of other pages with different BG images and content. My site would be a place for anyone who loves to travel to get information about trips/destinations and also be a place for people to share their travel stories.

I had some trouble with moving files around and breaking links (should have known better!).

Week 6 – process

We had to do three html layouts this week: a 2-column, 3-column liquid and a 3-column faux. I liked making the 1px graphic in PS, matching the colors of the columns and widths.  I then attached this to the CSS wrapper div as a background image. It worked great!  I changed the CSS a little bit with each layout, but nothing too drastic. I tried two different approaches when making the 3-column faux page. The first time I made a gif with three parts that had the same width as the entire document. I put this gif in the wrapper div and it seemed to work fine. Then, I read the chapter in the CSS Stylin’ book and did it with two gifs for the right and left columns. It seemed to look the same until I add extra content to one of the two outside columns. The content column was shorter and did not continue, just as the book said. I then made a third gif for the content color and it worked fine. I found that it was easier just making one gif with three parts than to use two or three separate ones.

Week 5 – process

I redesigned my original home page for MoMA (still not happy with it!), as well as the Explore page and Collections page. I ran into trouble with the sub-sub-nav and was unsure how to structure it.  My nav began horizontally at the top of the Home page and I used drop- down menus for the secondary nav items.  However, I went back to a horizontal nav on the third level down.  I was trying to keep all nav items from all three levels visible, but it might be confusing to the user to go from horiz/vert/horiz. I’ll have to re-think my design and the navigation elements.  It helped to see other people’s designs and see how they handled the navigation on each page down.

Week 4 – process

It was good practice this week  to hand code an HTML page and change the CSS on an external style sheet.  I used to be more intimidated by code and this exercise taught me how easy it is to quickly change a style/property on a div tag in code view.  I won’t bother posting the code in this post.

Week 3 – process

I came across this helpful site when researching wireframes http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/07/using-wireframes-to-streamline-your-development-process/

On the “Who We Are” page, I ran into a bit of a space problem, trying to figure out where the four images/bios would go. I kept shrinking the “heads” to make it fit. (Yes, I was a shrink in my former life.)
